You can download the ReferralNet Agent from the Downloads page on the ReferralNet web site.
Before you install the Agent, you need to be aware of the two different modes the Agent runs as.
When you install the Agent as a "Tray Application", it runs when you log into Windows, displaying an icon in the System Notification Area (next to the clock in the Start Bar).
The advantages of running as a Tray Application is it will have access to everything you have access to; it will be able to access certificates stored on smartcards, and will be able to access network shares for saving files to other applications.
The main disadvantage of running as a Tray Application is you have to be logged in to Windows for it to start. When you log out of Windows, the Agent will stop running.
When you install the Agent as a "Windows Service", it will be installed as a service visible with the "Services" administration console.
The main advantage of running as a service is it will automatically be started by Windows when you turn on the computer; logging out of Windows will not stop the Agent from running.
The main disadvantage of running as a service is you will not be able to use any certificates where the private key is stored on a hardware device (such as a smartcard or iKey USB device). This limitation exists because these devices prompt for a password the first time the certificate is accessed; this prompt will not be visible when running as a service.
Another disadvantage of running as a service is services do not have access to read from or write to network mapped drives.
When running as a Windows Service, the interactive sending capability of the Agent is disabled.
After downloading the setup application and running it, you'll be presented with a normal Windows installer.
Note:: Administrator privileges are required to install the Agent.
You will be prompted to select the installation mode, and the destination directory.
The Agent can be uninstalled via Add/Remove Programs.
