The MarkDocumentSet operation allows a receiving system the ability to associate custom status events to a received document.

This method is particularly useful when the static set of events DELETE, NOTIFY, RETRIEVE, READ, and READ FAILURE are not sufficient to reflect a recipient systems' processing model. A typical use case for this method is when the processing logic of a receiving system is more granular than simply a READ of the message, it may well schedule the message first, then triage the message, finally ending in a READ event. In this scenario, the recipient system could reflect these custom stages back to the sender by invoking this method.

It is important to note that custom events do not initate work flow whereas some of the static events do. An example of this is the MarkDocumentSetRead operation, which causes the ReferralNet service to automatically generate and deposit a read receipt message to be deposited into the senders inbox.
